CIA Manages International Drug Trade Mexican

The reason D.A.R.E was created it seemed nearly impossible to stop people from using drugs and they thought it would be a good idea to educate the kids about the dangers of using drugs and how to not get involved in drugs. 
Only one problem, the war can never be won. How can the Government tell people do not get involved in drugs while at the same time the United States Government CIA Agents aid in drug dealing with the leaders and Billionaire “El Chapo” of the Sinaloa Cartel.  

The Central Intelligence Agency’s involvement in drug trafficking is back in the media spotlight after a spokesman for the violence-plagued Mexican state of Chihuahua became the latest high-profile individual to accuse the CIA, which has been linked to narcotics trafficking for decades, of ongoing efforts to “manage the drug trade.” The infamous American spy agency refused to comment.

In a recent interview, Chihuahua state spokesman Guillermo Terrazas Villanueva told Al Jazeera that the CIA and other international “security” outfits “don’t fight drug traffickers.” Instead, Villanueva argued, they try to control and manage the illegal drug market for their own benefit.

“It’s like pest control companies, they only control,” Villanueva told the Qatar-based media outlet last month at his office in Juarez. “If you finish off the pests, you are out of a job. If they finish the drug business, they finish their jobs.”

Another Mexican official, apparently a mid-level officer with Mexico’s equivalent of the U.S. Department of “Homeland Security,” echoed those remarks, saying he knew that the allegations against the CIA were correct based on talks with American agents in Mexico. “It’s true, they want to control it,” the official told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity.

Credibility issues with employees of the notoriously corrupt Mexican government aside, the latest accusations were hardly earth shattering — the American espionage agency has been implicated in drug trafficking from Afghanistan to Vietnam to Latin America and everywhere in between. Similar allegations of drug running have been made against the CIA for decades by former agents, American officials, lawmakers, investigators, and even drug traffickers themselves.

Some of the most prominent officials to level charges of CIA drug trafficking include the former head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Robert Bonner. During an interview with CBS, Bonner accused the American “intelligence” outfit of unlawfully importing a ton of cocaine into the U.S. in collaboration with the Venezuelan government.

Even the New York Times eventually covered part of the scandal in a piece entitled “Anti-Drug Unit of C.I.A. Sent Ton of Cocaine to U.S. in 1990.” And the agency’s Inspector General, Frederick Hitz, was eventually forced to concede to a congressional committee that the CIA has indeed worked with drug traffickers and obtained a waiver from the Department of Justice in the 1980s allowing it to conceal its contractors’ illicit dealings.

An explosive investigation by reporter Gary Webb dubbed the “Dark Alliance” also uncovered a vast CIA machine to ship illegal drugs into the U.S. to fund clandestine and unconstitutional activities abroad, including the financing of armed groups. Webb eventually died under highly suspicious circumstances — two gunshots to the head, officially ruled a “suicide.”

Responding to Webb’s discoveries, top officials and even lawmakers eventually acknowledged that the CIA almost certainly had a role in illegal drug trafficking. “There is no question in my mind that people affiliated with, or on the payroll of, the CIA were involved in drug trafficking,” explained U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) after the Dark Alliance series.

Top-level Mexican officials have suggested complicity by U.S. officials in drug trafficking as well — even recently. “It is impossible to pass tons of drugs or cocaine to U.S. without some grade of complicity of some American authorities,” observed Mexican President Felipe Calderon in a 2009 interview with the BBC.

Last year, an explosive report in the Washington Times, citing a CIA source, speculated that the agency may be deliberately helping certain Mexican cartels to beat out others for geopolitical purposes. According to the sources, the intelligence outfit might have also played a key role in the now-infamous Fast and Furious scandal, which saw the federal government providing thousands of high-powered weapons to Mexican cartels.

Shortly before that, The New American reported on federal court filings by a top Sinaloa Cartel operative that shed even more insight on the U.S. government’s role in drug trafficking. The accused “logistical coordinator” for the cartel, Jesus Vicente “El Vicentillo” Zambada-Niebla, claimed that he had an agreement with top American officials: In exchange for information on rival cartels, the deal supposedly gave him and his associates immunity to import multi-ton quantities of drugs across the border.

Indeed, United States government agents aided the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel,” the court filing states. Zambada-Niebla is currently being held in federal prison, but he argues that he is innocent because he had approval from — and collaborated with — U.S. agencies in his illegal drug-trafficking operations.
Another expert who spoke with Al Jazeera, a university professor, also indicated that the American federal government was deeply involved in the drug trafficking business. He said the drug war was an “illusion” aimed at justifying control of populations and intervention in Latin America. As evidence, he pointed to the fact that one of the top drug kingpins in the world — billionaire “El Chapo” of the Sinaloa cartel — operates openly and with impunity.
Numerous drug bosses and American officials have made similar claims, alleging that the U.S. government in essence controls at least some of the cartels. According to former DEA operative and whistle blower Celerino Castillo, American federal authorities have even been training members of the brutal Los Zetas cartel in Texas.
CIA and DEA insider Phil Jordan, meanwhile, publicly claimed last year that the Obama administration was selling military-grade weaponry to the deadly organization through a front company in Mexico. And with the Fast and Furious scandal, it emerged that the Obama administration was using tax money to arm Mexican cartels, then exploiting the ensuing violence to attack the Second Amendment.
The President and his Department of Justice have been engaged in a cover-up since whistle blowers first exposed the scheme more than a year ago, leading Congress to hold disgraced Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt. Another congressional investigation being obstructed by the Justice Department surrounds DEA drug-money laundering operations revealed in an explosive New York Times article late last year.
“While the quality of the involvement of the CIA and other security agencies may be debatable, it is impossible to excise the blame from America,” noted an analysis about the latest allegations published by Catholic Online. “If the CIA is part of the problem, then it will only be one more sign of the corruption and evil that pervades American and Mexican politics and holds hostage millions of innocents.”
Some 50,000 people have died just in recent years as part of Mexico’s U.S. government-backed “war on drugs,” and anger south of the border continues to build. But even as Latin American leaders openly debate legalization and threaten to defect from the controversial “war,” the Obama administration has promised to continue showering taxpayer money on regimes that expand the battle.

Meanwhile, as the bloodshed continues to spiral out of control, the U.S. border remains virtually wide open on purpose, according to experts. And despite tens of billions spent on the endless “war,” numerous analyses indicate that the flow of illegal drugs into America is actually growing — not to mention consumption. By contrast, Portugal, which legalized all drugs about a decade ago, has seen declining rates of addiction, drug abuse, and crime.
In the United States, pressure is still growing on both sides of the aisle to reform or end the unconstitutional federal drug war once and for all, with polls showing rapidly declining support among voters. Over a dozen states have already nullified some unconstitutional federal statutes on marijuana as well. How long the “war” will go on, however, may depend on the federal government’s ability to continue borrowing funds to wage it.

Unfortunately, the above article just scratches the surface of the CIA’s involvement in the worldwide drug trade. Not only does it “manage” the cocaine coming from Mexico and South America, it practically owns the heroin trade coming from Afghanistan.

Boeing Paid No Federal Income Tax Last Year: Analysis

One of the largest recipients of federal government contracts paid nothing in taxes last year, according to an analysis from the Center for Effective Government, a left-leaning think tank.
Boeing reported an $82 million tax refund last year, but made $5.9 billion in U.S. pre-tax profits during the same period, the analysis of the company’s recent government filings found. That means Boeing paid a federal tax rate of -1.4 percent. At the same time, the company won 4.4 percent of all federal contracts last year, according to the report.
"Companies that live by the taxpayer purse should be contributing to the welfare of the states and paying their taxes," said Scott Klinger, the author of the report. "The fact that we have major federal contractors that are consistently not doing that should raise questions for our legislators about how this could be."
The company has a history of using loopholes to lower its tax bill, according to Matt Gardner, the executive director of the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. The report found that Boeing paid a tax rate of -0.4 percent over the past five years.
“The fact that Boeing paid no income tax this year is not at all surprising because they have a very reliable track record of paying little or nothing in federal and income state tax,” Gardner said.
Boeing disputes the report’s findings, saying its federal tax rate was actually 26.4 percent last year. Chaz Bickers, a Boeing spokesman, said the analysis ignores a crucial part of the company's tax expense. When the Boeing decides to embark on building a new aircraft, its taxes are deferred to encourage investment that could take decades to materialize a profit. But once they actually deliver the aircraft, those deferred taxes turn into current ones.
“Our current tax expense has been reduced somewhat in recent years by the very large investment we have made in American jobs, production facilities and research and development for our new airplanes -- they are taxes that largely are deferred until we begin to deliver our new airplanes (and get the revenue back from our investment) in high volume at steady rates,” Bickers wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.
The chart below from Boeing's 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission shows the company's deferred and current tax expenses. The -82 under "Current tax expense" is what the company paid in federal taxes this year, while other taxes are listed as "deferred." Both are considered part of the company's total tax expense:

While it’s true that the Center for Effective Government analysis doesn’t include Boeing’s deferred taxes, Gardner characterized them differently. “Deferral technically means that you’re postponing tax, that this tax will be paid some day,” he said. “They are essentially shifting taxes forward indefinitely.”
Boeing’s not alone in using corporate tax breaks to its advantage, and Gardner noted that they're doing nothing that's illegal in any way. In fact, Boeing is not known for engaging in some of the more notorious “creative accounting” practices, like moving profits offshore to avoid paying U.S. taxes on them.
“We know that an awful lot of Fortune 500 corporations have found ways to zero out their taxes in a lot of years,” Gardner said. “[Boeing is] doing what the tax law allows them to do. At the same time, we know that other companies are being inventive -- they’re creating their own tax breaks.”
Still, the company’s sheer scale has allowed it to score some major tax concessions. Washington state gave Boeing what is believed to be the biggest state tax break in U.S. history. Lawmakers voted last year to give the company $8.7 billion in tax breaks through 2040 in an effort to convince Boeing to locate a new, large manufacturing plant in the state.
The company insisted on more, though, threatening to pull production from the Seattle area and possibly move it to a less union-friendly state if the machinist union didn’t agree to major concessions. Ultimately, the promise of jobs won out. The union voted by a narrow margin to approve an eight-year contract extension that included a pension freeze. The company conceded some too, scaling back some of its initial proposals to slow workers’ pay increases.
Boeing announced earlier this week that it would build the plant that will make wings for the 777x, a new plane, in Washington.

Officer Stephen Wong of the Brooklyn division of the New York Police Department walked into a local massage parlor, stood there for all of about 30 seconds, and walked outside telling other officers that he had just been solicited for sex by 7 women inside the establishment, at which point all 7 women and the massage parlor owner were hauled down to the police station on prostitution charges.
Upon arrival to the station, the massage parlor owner exclaimed that the arresting officers were lying about being solicited, and that he could prove it with his business’s surveillance camera. So, while holding the group of arrestees at the station, Wong, along with two other officers, stage a raid and break into the massage parlor to steal the evidence which proved the officer’s story to be a lie. With the evidence secured, the officer thought himself to be in the clear, until it was discovered that massage parlor owner had everything stored on a back up hard drive which not only caught the initial arrest of the owner and the 7 women, but also the fake raid.
Soon after a media firestorm began with the 3 officers responsible for the break-in being fired and criminally charged. At first, it seemed as though our justice system was actually doing its job for once in regards to stiff prosecution of corrupt officers, but alas, that turned out to be nothing more than a fallacy.
Prosecutors, as anticipated, waited for the media to go away and then began to suspiciously make “mistakes” much to the benefit of law enforcement, most notably, giving the defendant officer’s lawyers an edited version of the surveillance video, which was completely unnecessary given that the officers had already been caught red handed. But, because the prosecutors had not complied with the rules of evidence exchange as outlined by the courts, this gave the judge everything he needed to help the officers by throwing out their case. Thus, all officers who conspired to destroy someone else’s life with false accusations of criminal misconduct, had now gotten off scot-free.

It becomes evident that the so-called “mistakes” in this case were a deliberate attempt to shield the officers involved in this matter, given them a one-way ticket home without consequence or repercussion, as is often the case with rogue police officers. It would seem that those who have been given so much power, should carry a significant amount of consequence when that power is abused. Yet, given the manner in which our government operates, those with power seemingly always have an exit strategy which ultimately will allow them to capitalize from their unlawful behavior, thus allowing governmental corruption to continue to fester.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) may need to take a second look at his date of birth after claiming in an interview that he voted for Republican idol and former President Ronald Reagan.
Walker told Right Wing News that one of Reagan's merits was that you knew what you were going to get in return for voting for his candidacy.
"I remember, I was a teenager, had just become a teenager and voted for Ronald Reagan -- limited government, you know, smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense. You knew what you were getting," Walker said. "You knew how a Reagan administration, a Reagan presidency was going to be better for you."

As one blogger notes, Walker, who was born in 1967, would have been 13 when Reagan first ran for president and only 17 when Reagan was reelected.
Walker has been frequently mentioned as a potential presidential candidate in 2016.

The price of gold: Taking first place in Olympics could cost US stars as much as $10G in taxes

An athlete who wins gold at the 2014 Olympic Games under way in Sochi, Russia, stands in line to pay $10,000 to Uncle Sam.

The U.S. Olympic Commission awards cash prizes to Olympians who win a medal -- $25,000 for a gold, $15,000 for a silver and $10,000 for a bronze. But the money is considered earned income abroad and subject to IRS taxation.

“The only thing colder than the slopes at Sochi is the fact that any prizes awarded by the USOC will be taxed,” writes the group Americans for Tax Reform, which has calculated the federal tax that medal winners could face.

The group also argues the United States is one of only a handful of developed countries that taxes such income, which means other Olympic competitors will likely not have to pay such taxes.

“The U.S. has officially ‘earned the gold’ for having one of the most backward and illogical tax codes in the world,” the group said.

The marginal-income tax bracket into which an Olympian falls would decide how much he or she must pay. And the amounts do not take into account income taxes owed in most states.

U.S. stars such as snowboarder Shaun White, a former gold medalist with a signature clothing line, or alpine skier Bode Miller, a five-time Olympic gold medalist who is reportedly worth millions, are in the top 39.6 percent tax bracket. So they could pay as much as $9,900 should they repeat gold this month.

All Olympians in that bracket also could pay $5,940 for a silver and $3,960 for a bronze medal.

The tax group, perhaps surprisingly, argues applying the top bracket to gold medal winners is “reasonable,” considering they are likely to have marketing, endorsement, speaking and other such deals in 2014. So they should have higher-than-usual earnings.

The debate about whether Olympians should be subject to the taxes often resurfaces at the start of the winter or summer games.

On Tuesday, Texas GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold re-introduced legislation -- the "Tax Exemptions for American Medalists (TEAM) Act" – that would exempt U.S. Olympic athletes from paying taxes on the medals and the accompanying money.

"This needless tax illustrates how complicated and burdensome our tax code has become," he said.  “We need a fairer system for all, and eliminating this unnecessary tax burden on our athletes is a good way to start.”

During the 2012 presidential campaign, Republican nominee Mitt Romney and President Obama backed a similar Senate proposal.

An Olympian in the 28 percent bracket, about the middle range, could pay as much as $7,000 for a gold, $4,200 for a silver and $2,800 for a bronze medal.

Those is the lowest -- the 10 percent bracket -- could pay $2,500 for a gold, $1,500 for a silver and $1,000 for a bronze medal.

Well, it’s official now: The U.S. government on Friday breached the current debt ceiling. Congress probably has until the end of February to raise the cap before the Treasury begins to default on its borrowing for the first time ever.

 The government’s borrowing cap of $16.69 trillion was suspended last October as part of a bipartisan budget deal that ended the 16-day government shutdown and gave Congress until early this year to pass a new budget and get the government’s fiscal house in order. Today was the deadline for reinstituting the old debt ceiling unless lawmakers and the White House could agree on a new, higher borrowing level. 

 

But with House Speaker John Boehner and his Republican members at odds over whether to demand concessions from President Obama – such as approving the Keystone XL pipeline or rescinding recent cuts in benefits for some military retirees – in return for voting to raise the debt ceiling, the government has officially exceeded its current borrowing authority by about $590 billion. As of this morning, the national debt stood at $17.285 trillion.

Washington has long spent more money than it takes in, and must make up the difference by borrowing. Since 1960, Congress has acted 78 separate times to permanently raise, temporarily extend or revise the definition of the debt limit – 49 times under Republican presidents and 29 times under Democratic presidents
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew warned again this week that his department will exhaust a series of “extraordinary measures” or bookkeeping tricks to avoid actually defaulting on its borrowing by the end of this month. The last time the government came within a day of defaulting, back in the summer of 2011, Standard & Poor’s cut the rating of the government’s long-term federal debt by a notch, from the top grade of AAA to AA+.

Boehner declared at a news conference on Thursday, “We do not want to default on our debt, and we will not default on our debt.”  But it was far from clear how he hoped to break the deadlock within his own conference and pass a bill that is acceptable to Senate Democrats and the White House before the end of the month.
Politico reported this afternoon that House Republicans were getting close to introducing a bill that would lift the debt limit until the first quarter of 2015, while patching the Medicare reimbursement rate for nine months and reversing the recent changes in military retirement benefits. The bill could come up for a vote as soon as next week.

Patching the reimbursement rate for doctors who treat Medicare patients — known as  doc fix” — and restoring some  cost of living benefits for the military would be costly. Under the emerging plan, House Republicans would seek to pay for those items with an extra year of cuts to mandatory spending and changes to pension contributions.

“In this fragile economic recovery the last thing workers and businesses need is another round of Republican debt limit drama,” Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA) said on Friday.  “There’s no reason to drag this out any longer.”

While the one-cent, once-copper coin doesn't have the purchasing power it used to, Americans still have a hard time letting it go. A HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted in January found that only 34 percent of Americans are in favor of eliminating the penny, while 51 percent oppose it. The poll didn't ask about rounding up all the pennies and melting them down into a giant statue of Abraham Lincoln's face, but chances are that wouldn't be a popular option. (It wouldn't be very practical, either, since the U.S. has minted nearly 92 billion pennies since 2000, with about 7 billion new ones created in 2013 alone.)
Jarden Corporation would likely be among those interested in keeping the penny around. The multibillion-dollar consumer products company, based outside New York City, is the U.S. government's exclusive supplier of penny blanks, the unprinted discs that are made up of 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper. Jarden Zinc Products has received $800 million for this contract since 2000. That's about 80 billion pennies in payment for the 92 billion it's helped put into circulation.
Is it possible that simple nostalgia and our fond memories of "take a penny, leave a penny" trays are protecting a coin that's worthless to pretty much everyone besides the multinational conglomerate that helps produce it? And if not, why exactly is the penny worth keeping around? Let's consider the following...
It costs more than two cents to make one penny.

According to the U.S. Mint, a penny costs 2.41 cents to produce. That means the government spent nearly $169 million in 2013 just to put $70 million of currency into circulation. The disparity between the actual monetary worth of the penny and the value of the zinc inside has even led to concerns that people would stop using the coins as money and start melting them down for the raw materials.
None of this is lost on President Barack Obama or congressional lawmakers. Last year, Obama said during an online "Fireside Chat" that pennies were obsolete, and suggested that they were only still in use because people were "attached emotionally" to the coins. Congress has weighed getting rid of them, though pro-penny lobbying efforts and public opinion have stood in the way.
Stop! It's literally not worth your time to bother with that penny.

Remember that old fun fact about Bill Gates' time being so valuable that it wouldn't be worth it for him to stop and pick up a $100 bill? The same goes for most Americans and a penny. The average wage was right around $22 an hour in 2012, meaning that we make much more than one cent in the time it takes us to stop, reach down, pick up a penny and put it in our pocket so we can go do whatever it is that people do with pennies. It probably says something that you see pennies lying abandoned on the street in the first place.
According to Jeff Gore, an MIT scientist and founder of Citizens for Retiring the Penny, the average American spends at least 2.4 hours handling pennies every year. And that's not including retail employees, whose job involves handling change and often sliding four pennies out of the register, one by one. It seems like the only reason to carry pennies now is to protect yourself against getting more of them.
Gore has claimed that the time we all waste fumbling around with pennies translates to $15 billion lost nationwide every year. Some stores have caught on: In 2012, a number of Chipotle restaurants began rounding purchases to the nearest nickel to save time at the cash register, though when customers noticed that they were sometimes paying an extra cent or two, the stores announced that they'd only round down.
In a world without pennies, prices wouldn't even be all that different.

Proponents of the penny, including the Americans for Common Cents (get it?), a Capitol Hill lobbying group representing Jarden Zinc, have been pushing the "rounding tax" argument since as early as 1990. The reasoning goes that retailers in a post-penny world might adjust prices so they could round up instead of down, and they'd pass on that cost to the consumer. Inflation would soon follow. Pro-penny studies have also suggested that this trend would disproportionately affect younger and poorer Americans, who are more likely to pay in cash and for whom those cents are more significant.
But a separate 2006 study, which looked at hundreds of thousands of transactions, found that after all other taxes and fees were added, rounding prices to the nearest nickel actually led to a net gain for customers. Another study done in Canada, where they began phasing out the penny in 2013, found that there would be no broader long-term impact on consumers.
In Canada, the price of a purchase is rounded up or down when the customer pays in cash, and left unadjusted when the customer uses another form of payment. Concerns about retailers massaging prices to skim an extra penny or two from the customer have largely proved baseless, as it's difficult for stores to account for various fees added on to initial sale prices, not to mention all the customers who buy multiple items.
Sorry, but nobody misses the penny when it's gone.

When Canada began ridding itself of its lowest-denomination coin, it followed the example of a number of other nations that had already done so successfully. A study conducted by the Bank of Canada ahead of the decision to retire the penny concluded that there would be no significant impact on inflation. About a year into Canada's penniless phase, this has proven true, much like it has in other countries.
The U.S. has some experience with eliminating defunct currency. In 1857, it stopped minting the half-cent coin after Congress realized that its purchasing power (the equivalent of around 11 cents today) and cost of production had made it impractical. By most calculations, the move led to no immediate or long-term effects on the value of U.S. currency.
And some Americans are already used to a life without pennies. U.S. military bases abroad gave up on the coins around 30 years ago. The Department of Defense told the Los Angeles Times in 2008 that they were simply "too heavy and are not cost-effective to ship."
Charities will probably be OK.

Penny-defenders have claimed that charities -- the kind that hold penny drives and rely on small change donations -- would lose out if people didn't have the red cents in their pockets, or in jars and piggy banks at home.
But that effect hasn't been reported in other countries that went penniless, and at any rate, retiring the U.S. penny would be a gradual process, meaning that people could continue to use the coins for a set period of time. While Canada has stopped minting new pennies, the coin still technically holds value, though stores don't have to accept it. If the U.S. goes penny-free, people could offload their jars of pennies to charities whenever they wanted, though the impact would likely be modest. Even jars that hold a lifetime's worth of loose pennies are still probably only worth a few bucks.
Furthermore, with increasing options for even the smallest charities to accept money through electronic payments, the small-change drive is less important as a fundraising tool than it used to be. And opponents of the penny have suggested that without pennies, nickels would take over the role of "coins that everyone has and nobody needs" -- meaning that organizations like the Salvation Army and UNICEF could take in five times as much value when people start sending them jars of nickels.

According to a report commissioned by Jarden Zinc, eliminating the penny wouldn't necessarily remove all the losses currently associated with the U.S. Mint's production of the coin, at least for a few years. This would be due to fixed and overhead costs in the budget. While those would eventually disappear along with the penny, the report also points to a more significant issue: Nickels, which would go up in production in the absence of a lower-denomination coin, cost 11.2 cents to manufacture, meaning that they're almost as impractical as pennies.
That reminds us. Should we get rid of nickels while we're at it?

Do we really need them, anyway? At 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel, they're expensive to make. Furthermore, if we lost the nickel, most sums of change could still be rounded neatly to the nearest five, and paid out with a combination of dimes and quarters.
But people love these coins. Can't we save them?

Perhaps we're not ready to accept that both pennies and nickels are relatively worthless and will likely only get more so with inflation. Jarden is hoping we're not, anyway. The company commissioned a report looking at ways to rescue the coins, and found that the government could save hundreds of millions of dollars by using multi-ply plated steel technology in currency manufacturing, instead of the more valuable zinc and copper. Unsurprisingly, Jarden also produces steel in high volume.
Other parties have suggested using ceramic or plastic compounds in coins, though there are questions about the cost of retrofitting existing minting equipment to handle the new materials, and it's possible that the new weights of the coins would cause confusion with vending machines and parking meters.
But none of these solutions will satisfy those who believe we should keep minting pennies and nickels in their current state -- even if we do so at a huge loss. Supposedly, those humble little coins serve as a reminder to the government of "how properly to conduct monetary policy" -- that is, with currency tied to things that have physical value, instead of just easily printable paper money and credit.
