If Republicans insist on shutting down the government, they should automatically lose their paychecks.
And that’s exactly why Democratic Rep. Rick Nolan introduced a bill on Friday that would do precisely that.
In October 2013, Senator Ted Cruz persuaded House Republicans to shut the government down in an effort to repeal Obamacare. As the economy lost billions of dollars, government workers were sent home from their jobs, and businesses suffered setbacks, Cruz and the other assholes who caused the turmoil in the first place were still receiving their taxpayer funded paychecks.
Now Cruz wants to shut the government down again over Planned Parenthood funding. It looks like it’s going to happen since House Republicans just passed a government funding bill that strips funds from the women’s health organization. And you can bet Cruz and his accomplices will all expect to collect their paychecks, while they harm this country out of petty ideological bullshit based on heavily edited videos that are nothing more than complete lies.
But Nolan’s bill would ensure that even members of Congress feel the pain of a government shutdown.
“It’s time to put an end to government by crisis management,” Nolan said.
“And it’s time for Congress to start living in the real world where you either do your job or you don’t get paid. If hundreds of thousands of other federal employees are to go without their salaries — twisting slowly in the wind in a government shutdown — then the Congress should not be paid either.”Indeed, members of Congress make a salary of at least $174,000 a year whether they actually do their jobs or not, despite how much they hurt the country. And the taxpayers are the ones who pay for it.
That’s outrageously unfair and needs to end. Nolan’s bill is a means to change that.
If Ted Cruz and Republicans think they can take America hostage in order to get what they want and not face any consequences or backlash, they are sorely mistaken.
